Here's a quick update on our trout. Here are 2 pictures at 6 weeks of development. All yolk sacs have pretty much been absorbed into the fish and most are now actively feeding on fish food from the top. The above picture is of our lone deformity. We had 5 fish die since the beginning but this one had a mutation where (from what we can decipher) the yolk sac was enclosed within the fishes belly. This skin did not recede as the yolk sac did, leaving this bubble. The bottom represents a typical healthy Brown Trout.

Wow! What a mutation! It's quite interesting that one of the trout has a mutation. Was it caused by adding information to the gene pool or taking away genetic information?

Chad DeVoe said...

I guess I'm not sure what you mean by "information".

Anonymous said...

"Information" meaning the genetic coding needed for the formation of the yoke sac in the proper place on the trout's body. If information was added to have the yoke sac form inside the stomach, then that specific life form is getting more and more complex. If the information was lost, then that life form is getting less complex and is heading towards complete chaos, which the second law of thermodynamics clearly states happens to all things.

Chad DeVoe said...

Anonymous,

Well I'm no ichthyologist or geneticist but I do know that whatever a mutation can do it can also undo so I guess there would be no net gain or loss of any "information". So if for some reason this mutation were an advantage for this particular fish in the current environment it would be favored by the gene pool and would show up with more frequency.

I've seen these arguments before by several anti-science individuals and organizations, especially in response to natural selection - the current theory that explains the workings of evolution. You must understand that the same biology that explains heredity and has lead to countless medical discoveries also confirms evolution. The same physics that makes your computer view this website confirms evolution and the same geology that lead to the discovery and extraction of fossil fuels to power your car also confirms evolution. The same science that confirms evolution will also hopefully improve the lives for all of us in the future and solve the numerous ecological problems that lie before us.

Thanks for writing.
