Today we discussed the importance of the endocrine system and a few of the disorders associated with it. We read about goiters but there were no pictures in the book...so here you go. Tomorrow should be interesting because we will be researching about human problems associated with environmental poisons like pesticides and dioxins.

I'm not sure if she did or not. I don't think goiters are life-threatening.

Are only black people affected by this?

Sue,

I'm not sure who you are but it's good that you brought this up. Goiters are the result of an iodine deficiency. Fortunately, here in the US, our salt (NaCl) is enriched with iodine (iodized salt) so it is very rare to see goiters in Americans, because we all know how much salt americans consume. Goiters are more commonly found in 3rd world nations, where salt is rare in naturally-occuring foods. The disorder, unlike sickle-cell anemia for example, is found in more than just "black people".
