Stephanie,

Scurvy is a gum disorder that results from the deficiency of Vitamin C. Sailors used to get it while at sea for extended periods of times but it is pretty rare nowadays. This is from Wiki:

"Scurvy is mostly caused by the lack of Vitamin C. In modern western society, scurvy is rarely present in adults. However, vitamin C is destroyed by the process of pasteurization, so babies fed with ordinary bottled milk sometimes suffer from scurvy if they are not provided with adequate vitamin supplements. Virtually all commercially available baby formulas contain added vitamin C for this reason, however heat destroys vitamin C. Human breast milk contains sufficient vitamin C to prevent scurvy on its own."

stephine,
i put up those pics because we were talkin bout it in Soc. St. and we just happened to do a little research on it...but i dont think that brushing yuor teeth alone will prevent scurvy. the main thing that prevents scurvy is vitamin c. you can get plenty of vitamin c if you eat/drink things w/ citric acid...like orange juice!!
